Karla Sutra is famous for her subtle aphrodisiac tiles. She tricks the eye and stimulates senses by using the mural ceramic rhythm, hiding her lovemaking figures in incredible choreographies, based on a mirror and a an optical trompe l’oeil technique.
Inspired by Mediterranean architecture, modern art, Japanese Hentai and Kama Sutra as well, this Catalan artist creates watercolor hand painted erotic azulejos. These “sauteries illusionnistes” are to be considered as her sensual manifesto. Karla Sutra is a kind of UFO on the border between handcraft and contemporary art.`
The purpose is to draw interlacing bodies by playing with the geometry and the mirror effects created by the tiles. She then learned ceramics in order to bring her drawings to life. Since then, Karla Sutra keeps opening her work to new forms. Since ceramic- her favorite material - is the focus of her work, she soon turns to tableware.
An epicurean, she finds her inspiration in the almost erotic link between body and food and develops series of «surprise» plates showing smutty characters. Her sexy crockery and erotic tiles soon ornate the tables - and walls- of the prominent restaurants of the French capital, so that the artist can showcase the work of her Catalan ceramists, opening thereby new creative spaces. Her work is a proactive and multiple one, from paintings to tableware, from design to interior design with her tiles.
She likes to be surprised by collaborating with inspiring personalities. Luxury, good food and design, the young woman creates her work between roots and vanguard while questioning the prevalent propriety of our time.
The artist intends to give a central place to sensuality to a both noble and carnal link between human beings, which she considers to be lost. Karla Sutra first solo show «En corps et Encore» was held in Paris in April 2023.
